Wrexham
is exceptionally well served, at all levels of education. There is a good
network of state primary and secondary schools and there are also a number
of private day and boarding schools close by.
Yale College, the local Further Education provider, has recently moved into new 15m premises adjacent to the town centre. It provides post GCSE education and a wide range of vocational courses. Yale has close links with the local business community, for which it frequently organises on and off-site training courses.
Glyndŵr University is an Associate College of the University of Wales. It has full and part-time students and offers a broad portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Glyndŵr University has a thriving Engineering Department and, reflecting the concentration of aerospace industries close by, runs courses in Avionics and Aeronautical Engineering, as well as in the more conventional branches of engineering. Glyndŵr University also has a tradition of strength in applied research and is a Centre of Excellence for both Opto-Electronics and Materials Science. The College has strong ties with local and regional businesses, it organises bespoke training courses and is involved in government sponsored R&D projects with companies. It is also involved in a number of initiatives which involve both graduates and under graduates in working placements with companies.
Looking to the broader region, Wrexham is within an hour's drive of 10 universities including, most notably, Manchester and Liverpool. All these universities work closely with the business community and are keen to make their expertise available to companies. It is also worth noting that a large number of the institutions in this particular area have exceptional research departments, which received the highest possible rating under the latest Research Assessment Exercise.
