The Wrexham Maelor Hospital, situated on the outskirts of town, is the largest NHS hospital in North Wales. It underwent an extensive programme of modernisation throughout the 1990s, with investment of around £34m, and the facilities are superb. Another £4m is due to be spent by 2002.

As well as the normal activities of the hospital, Wrexham Maelor is involved in R&D in medical and social healthcare.

It has an extensive teaching department and works on joint initiatives with NEWI (the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education) and with the University of Wales College of Medicine.

The activities of the hospital are complemented by the development, in the adjoining Wrexham Technology Park, of a number of highly specialised medical and pharmaceutical companies.

Wrexham also has a private hospital - the BUPA Yale hospital which is situated immediately next to the Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
