Our intention was to raise awareness and provide opportunities both during the fortnight and on into the future. A series of activities were undertaken, which linked to a variety of school aspects, and were cross curricular. They were not just aimed at pupils, but at Darland as a community.
Activities
- Assemblies
- Power point of pupil/staff thoughts of all year groups. It was delivered by year 10’s option group and Mr Mcdonald (Geography).
At the end of the assembly ‘Promise Cards’ were given out to those who wanted to complete and return. For example, Opportunities
were outlined such as the provision of a Fairtrade shop in room 25 at lunch times.
- Displays
- There was a main display in the foyer outside the main hall as well as cryptic posters and messages all around school.
For example ‘Its Not Fair’, ‘What has it got to do with me’ and ‘How can I help’.
- Eisteddfod
- Themed in RE – Promoting Fairtrade with a Welsh perspective.
- RE Lessons
- Have held discussions as well as conducting research by the pupils as well as quizzes etc.
- Library
- Maintained a Fairtrade Focus throughout the fortnight.
- Lunch Time Shop
- This was held by year 10 pupils. There were a range of goods available for sale including chocolate, juice,
cereal bars, jewellery etc. Also allowed people to opportunity to sign up to the promise cards and add their name to
‘sign up if they wanted to be Fair’ orange sheets.
- Main Staff Room
- There was free tea, coffee, chocolate and juice available to the staff. Posters were put up to encourage staff to try
things for themselves. They were also asked for suggestions of how this could be provided on a permanent basis.
- Newsletter
- Details of all our activities during the fortnight will be included in our next school newsletter.
- Ready Steady Cook
- Challenge took place against Ysgol Bryn Alyn in Gwersyllt. Darland entrants were runners up to the first prize taken by pupils of Bryn Alyn.
- Promise Cards and Sign up if you want to be Fair
- Blue and green (Fairtrade Colours) promise cards were distributed. Blue for parents, staff, visitors and supporters etc and green for pupils.
These created a very positive response, and will be used to make a more permanent display of support and commitment, along with the orange sheets.
We will try to act upon some of the suggestions given.
- Year 10 parents evening
- Head of year invited year 10 pupils involved with selling and the assemblies to have a stall at the parents evening providing parents with
an opportunity to try and buy.
- Year 11 – Learning for Exams (How can we help)
- The deputy head is currently enquiring about acquiring Fairtrade Bananas from Sainsbury’s to give to year 11 pupils prior to their exams.
Long may this enthusiasm continue.
