Wrexham, Flintshire, Denbighshire
and Conwy Fairtrade Coalitions and Education Authorities working together
Tuesday March 6th saw over 90 pupils from Wrexham primary schools joining pupils from Flintshire and Denbighshire schools at the Colomendy
Education Centre in Loggerheads for a Fairtrade Event as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.
During the day pupils participated in a Fairtrade Chant and a variety of workshops looking at how schools can become Fairtrade Schools;
Looking at the World in our Shopping Bags and creating a Fairtrade Banner.
One of the highlights of the day for the pupils was meeting Shailesh Patel, a Fairtrade cotton producer from India who is visiting all 22
Welsh counties in 14 days, to explain how Fairtrade is benefiting farmers in his community. At the end of the day he was presented with a
Banner of support from all the schools present with goodwill messages to take back to his community.
Vicky Barlow, Learning and Teaching Adviser for Religious Education said:
“It was very encouraging to see so many young people participating fully in the day and recognising their responsibility as
Global Citizens. I know that the Wrexham schools present will be feeding back to their school Councils in the coming weeks and
I look forward to working with them to become Fairtrade Schools. It is also important that we recognise the partnership work that took
place in arranging this event and on behalf of Wrexham schools I would like to thank all those who contributed to making this such a successful and
inspiring event.”
