Celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the completion of Thomas Telford's Pontcysyllte Aqueduct are underway and will continue through to a grand finale on 26th November, the day when the Aqueduct was first officially opened.
Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a proposed World Heritage site, is a 'waterway in the sky' and a masterpiece of engineering. It carries the Llangollen Canal 120 feet above the River Dee and attracts thousands of visitors every year, including Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart in 2004. BBC TV 'Holiday' programme followed in their footsteps and presenter Alan Titchmarsh picked the Aqueduct as one of the top 30 places to visit in the British Isles.
The activities planned focus on providing opportunities for community involvement and raising the profile of this splendid architectural/engineering feature.
