A selection of work from the Fine Art Degree students at NEWI. The strongest group of painters to emerge from the college in recent years, the artists deal with issues as diverse as mental health and our relationship with our environment.
The show runs for three weeks and shows a selection of work from 11 final year students who are set to collect their University of Wales BA (Hons) Fine Art Degrees this summer.
“In the age of ‘the individual’ it is increasingly difficult to stand out from the crowd but I believe each body of work in the show demonstrates how the individual voice can ‘sing out’ and I anticipate that the graduating Fine Art cohort of 2006 will continue to rise to this challenge in their careers as creative artists”.
Dr Alec Shepley, Reader in Fine Art
Amongst the more abstract concepts viewers will be confronted by what appear to be proto-type houses. Artist by Mike Wilson says ‘Shocked by the actions of those who seem to have absolute certainty, I reflected on the wisdom of entertaining a little doubt. This led me to the writings of Bertrand Russell. I have tried to express uncertainty and doubt in my work using reflected colour and other devices to intrigue the viewer. None of these works are intended to be tricks; anyone who cares to investigate should be able to see how they are made’.
Paul Redman brings once defunct computers back into use ‘There is a chasm created in the advancing of technology, stranding components and leaving them behind. These pieces swerve from active necessity to static non-function; they become pure object, out of circulation, unseen.’
