Emergence - Degree Exhibition

16 June – 7 July 2007

A selection of work from students graduating from the Fine Art Degree course at the School of Art & Design at NEWI in Wrexham. This is a strong and diverse selection of work including sculpture, painting, video, photography and installation pieces. The artists have used issues such as childhood memories, rural and urban landscape, consumerism and architecture as inspiration.

The exhibition runs for three weeks and shows a selection of work from 11 final year students who are set to collect their University of Wales BA (Hons) Fine Art Degrees this summer.

"A key objective of the course is the nurturing of each individual student’s ambition and central to the course’s philosophy is a keen fostering of what Mondrian referred to as that most ‘humble’ of things – the development of an artist! One crucial aspect of this ethos is the teaching of technical skills, the encouragement to take creative risks and the development of contemporary criticality".
Dr Alec Shepley, Reader in Fine Art

Viewers will be confronted immediately by what appears to a dialogue between three gigantic wedding dresses – or are they shoes – or handbags?  Artist Rosamund Tomlinson-Bell says that the works ‘…are inspired by the traditional skills used by women; stitching, knitting and crochet’. Bernie Moore’s paintings explore visual boundaries ‘ Our perception of space relies on internal boundary references; edges of walls, ceilings, floors and relative sizes between near and distant objects. But these boundaries are ephemeral, constantly changing with every eye movement and orientation of the head.’
