20 January – 3 March 2006
This exhibition celebrates a career spanning forty years which Sue Carney began as an art foundation student in Wrexham. She went onto a degree at Newcastle and became the first woman to be accepted for a Masters degree at The Royal College of Art.
In 1970 Sue Carney, whilst on a sabbatical from her studies as a fine art student in Newcastle, constructed a sculpture consisting of 2000 folded paper units. At the time this was a pragmatic solution to her lack of space and materials. It was to form a working methodology and use of paper as her dominant material that has been integral to her work.

Since 2004, after years of working on paper she has returned to the original folding technique, initially as a solution to a compositional problem.
The exhibition, a retrospective of her practice, which spans over 35 years, documents her long working relationship with paper and the inevitable return to the folding technique as a means of exploring the issues which have always dominated her work. These remain the questioning of value and hierarchy relating to materials and decoration and a search for a true hybrid practice that allows the aesthetics of east and west, male and female to co-exist.The venues chosen for the show correspond to places that the artist has lived and worked and have influenced her decision making.
At the end of British showings she has been offered the opportunity to exhibit the show in Gallery Sumuhka, Bangalore’s premier contemporary space as well as working with M.A. Fine Art students in Bangalore to produce a parallel exhibition at Chitrikala Arts Complex, Bangalore.
