Work from final year Fine Art students at North Wales School of Art and Design. NEWI.
Artists: Lindsay Clarke, Jan Hadfield, Sue Mann, June MacHenry, Hayley Parfitt, Rachel Roberts, Fabienne Russell, Sarah Scott, Carol Spencer, Laura Taylor, Kathy Watson.
Each year Oriel Wrecsam exhibits a selection of what we consider to be the most interesting works from the Fine Art Degree Shows at North Wales School of Art and Design. In contrast to previous years we decided to invite members of the teaching team at the art school to curate the show themselves, resulting in a very different approach.
Work was selected that typifies the current preoccupations of a significant number of students, with the aim of providing an insight into the nature of studio practice and critical discourse prevalent within the course at present.
Re: forms a prefix to a word provided by each artist which gives us an insight into the nature of their working process and in particular the way works have been made, remade, installed, rethought and reinstalled, often as a direct consequence of audience engagement within the art school’s own exhibition and project spaces.
What links these artists is an interest in process which they reflect upon through various forms of documentation. This documentation offers us a view into the evolution of the work, the decisions made, but also into the strategies employed in managing the uncertainty that is part of all Fine Art practice. The works themselves represent both the residue of action and the physical outcome of the creative decision making process.
