Gating Order Policy

Gating Order Policy Summary

What is a Gating Order?

A Gating Order allows for the erection of gates to restrict access along a public right of way either at all times or at specific times as defined in the order.

When should a gating order be considered?

Gating orders are not meant to be the first option to consider when tackling problems of crime and anti-social behaviour. Other approaches, such as increased police patrols, youth provision and improved street lighting, should be fully explored first.

Who can apply for a Gating Order?

Any individual, group or organisation may apply for an order but the local community will be consulted with as part of the application process.

How much does it cost?

If it is decided that an initial application for a gating order meets the necessary criteria a non-refundable administrative fee of £2000 is payable.

When a application has been accepted, design, legal and inspection costs are estimated at £1660 and the manufacture and installation of the gates will be a minimum of £1000. This latter fee could increase to £4000 dependent on the size and number of gates applied for. All these costs are met by the applicant.

Is funding available from the Council to support an application?

No funding has been allocated by the Council to date.

Are Gating Orders permanent?

Gating orders are only applicable for a 12 month period and at the end of that time an evaluation will take place to establish if they have been effective or not.  At this stage consideration would be given to either remove the gates or continue to have them in place.

How long does an application take to process?

Dependent on the accuracy of the information provided this will vary but the process includes a minimum period of 28 days for public consultation.  There will be scheduled gating panel meetings (see attached for dates) who will be responsible for processing the application further to the initial verification stage.
