Awareness of and satisfaction with current facilities and services

Just over half of respondents on the People’s Voice panel were aware that ‘sporting activities’ (53%) and ‘youth centres/youth clubs’ (50%) were provided in the neighbourhood. A further 48% were aware of the provision of ‘girl guides/scouts’ in their neighbourhood.

What should be provided?

Just under two thirds of respondents (65%) stated that ‘youth centres’ are the most important facility to provide for young people in their neighbourhood, with a further 57% stating ‘leisure services’.

The majority of panellists (74%) stated that they think youth facilities should be provided locally.   Just over four-fifths of respondents (82%) stated that they don’t think people should have to travel more than 3 miles to attend youth facilities.

Just over half of panellists stated that they think youth facilities should be provided ‘in other existing community buildings’.

Respondents were 10 percentage points more likely to state that they think youth facilities should be ‘available to young people aged between 11 and 25 years’ (55%) than ‘targeted at specific age groups with the 11 to 25 year age range’ (45%).  Respondents who stated they think youth facilities should be targeted at specific age groups were most likely to specify 14-16 year olds (92%) as the group they should be targeted at.

Respondents were most likely to state that youth facilities should be made available on ‘weekdays during the evening’ in both school/college term time (83%) and during school/college holidays (66%).

Responsibility for Young People

The majority of respondents agreed that all the listed groups should take responsibility for young people.  Within this, the vast majority (99%) agreed that it should be the’ parents/carers‘.   Following this were the Youth Service (83%), Schools (79%) and other family members (77%).

Young People and Anti-Social Behaviour

59% of panellists agreed that ‘antisocial behaviour caused by young people’ is a problem in their neighbourhood.  The vast majority of panellists (92%) agreed that ‘underage drinking is one of the main causes of young peoples’ antisocial behaviour’ while just over three quarters (76%) agreed that ‘young people behave antisocially because of peer pressure’
