Disabled Facilities Grants
Disabled facilities grants are available for a range of works necessary to help a disabled person to remain living independently at home. This includes access to essential amenities such as toilets and bathroom and kitchen facilities, and adapting the controls of any heating, lighting or power supplies to make them suitable for use.
How do I apply for a Grant?
Grants are available to persons of all ages, with a disability or life limiting illness. If you or a person who lives with you are experiencing difficulties in getting around in your home, or are having difficulty with bathing facilities in the home, due to illness/disability, then the first step is to contact the Contact Assessment Team of the Adult Social Care department, on 01978 292066. They will arrange for an Occupational Therapist to call and see you.
Following assessment a grant may be awarded for works that are:
- Deemed necessary and appropriate to meet the disabled person's needs
- Reasonable and practicable accounting for the age and layout of the property.
All grants awarded are subject to an assessment, which involves the Occupational Therapist visiting you to discuss your needs, and a Grants officer will also visit, to discuss the types of adaptations. If the outcome of this assessment is that an adaptation is necessary, then an application for Financial assistance will be completed with you.
For disabled adults, the award of any grant assistance is based on an assessment of your financial circumstances. Adaptations for children are not means - tested and where a disabled child is eligible for a disabled facilities grant, this is awarded in full.
It is important to note that large scale adaptations can take longer to complete because of the need sometimes to have plans drawn up or Planning approvals obtained. In 2007-08, the average number of days to complete an adaptation was 457 days. We are currently working to reduce this.
