A step by step guide to your Housing Grant Application
Over the years Wrexham County Borough Council have been responsible for giving Grants to improve living conditions for owner/occupiers, tenants and disabled people in the Wrexham area.
This leaflet has been produced to provide clear information about Housing Grants. It outlines the process from initial enquiry to completion of the work.
Initial Enquiry
- You make a grant enquiry.
- Send us your information on a completed grant enquiry form.
- We will prioritise and return your enquiry form.
- If repairs/adaptations are not the solution, we can put you in touch with other organisations who may be able to help.
- We will put you on the waiting list and send you an acknowledgement indicating your priority.
- We will keep you informed of your current position on the list for Grant Aid.

Grant Application
- Our Grant Officer will visit you and your property will be surveyed. You will then be given an application form.
- Assistance in completing this form may be provided by the Grant Officer. Wrexham Care & Repair can offer assistance if you are over 60 years of age and/or disabled.
- Form returned to you and a Means Test carried out to determine whether you will need to contribute to the scheme.
- You are informed of contribution you will need to pay with a return slip to indicate if you wish to proceed.
- At this time you will be informed of the requirements for a full application. If you wish you can employ either:
a) The Council's own technical agency, to provide, plans, estimates, reports, statutory surveys of Grant Aided works and authorise payments; or
b) A private agent of your choice. A Code of Practice for must be adhered to.
- Generally the costs of the above services will be covered by the grant, however, the grant will not be paid if you start the work before grant approval.
- Schedule of Works sent to you and to private agent or In-House Technical Agency.
Start of Building Work
- We provide help and support whilst work is in progress so that you are kept informed.
- We ensure that you are satisfied with the work before payment is made to the builder.
Our Commitment to You
- To visit 80% of all grants whilst work in is progress every 15 working days.
- To carry out inspections for unforeseen work within 24 hours of receipt of request (see site inspections).
- To carry out inspections for other works i.e. roofs, floors etc.
- To carry out interim and final inspection within 5 working days of receipt of request.
- To ensure that 80% of certificates for interim payment are issued within 5 working days of the inspection.
- To ensure that 80% of certificates for final payment are issued within 5 days of receipt of agreement of final accounts from quantity surveyors.
