Safety

Gas Safety

The law says we must service our gas appliances every year. In order to comply with the regulations we need to ensure that installation pipe-work, appliances and, where applicable, their flues are checked for safety at intervals of no more than 12 months.

We are also responsible for carrying out an annual gas safety check in every property with a gas supply. This includes a check on your own appliances.

Whenever possible we will give you a minimum of 24 hours notice. We will make an appointment with you.

Gas Leaks

If you suspect a gas leak you should turn off the appliance and the gas supply at the meter and contact TRANSCO immediately. The emergency TRANSCO number is 0800 111 999.

  • Do NOT operate any switches to electrical appliances.
  • Open windows to allow gas to disperse and put out fires, naked flames and cigarettes.

TRANSCO will attempt to trace the leak and carry out immediate repairs if they can be done easily. If more extensive work is required TRANSCO will cap the incoming supply. You should then notify the Council who will arrange to have the necessary work carried out as quickly as possible thereafter.

Electrical Safety

Most accidents involving electricity can be avoided if the following simple rules are followed:

  • never wire more than one appliance into one plug
  • only use adaptors for low loaded items such as table lamps, radios, alarm clocks etc
  • do not take electrical appliances into the bathroom
  • never touch any electrical appliance with wet hands
  • always unplug appliances when not in use
  • never run a flex to an electrical appliance under a carpet as you will not know when the cable frays
  • replace frayed flexes promptly
  • make sure all appliances are fitted with the correct fuse in the plug
  • do not obstruct the consumer unit (fuse box) - we may need quick and easy access to it in an emergency
  • it is vital , in the interests of your own safety , that you fit a contact breaker to the plug socket when using any appliance or machinery outside e.g. hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, strimmers etc

Solid Fuel

Use only approved fuel suitable for your appliance (your coal merchant will advise you which fuels are suitable). It is recommended that smokeless fuels are used. Use of petroleum coke is not recommended as this may lead to damage to the appliance which could incur a repair charge.

Always use a fire guard where children are present or when the fire is left burning un-attended. Beware that hot water may become very hot especially when the central heating radiators are off. It is advisable not to use the immersion heater when the fire is burning.

Always ensure the air vent in the wall is kept unobstructed at all times. Your chimney should be swept every 6 months. If you think the sweep is overdue contact the repairs free–phone number on 0800 0855 808.
