How are Housing and Council Tax Benefit Calculated?

In the preceding chapters we have taken you through all the elements that will make up your benefit calculation. In this chapter we will bring together all this information so that you can see how your benefit will be calculated.

For claimants on Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance Income Based, and Guaranteed Pension Credit:

For claimants who are NOT on Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance Income Based, and Guaranteed Pension Credit:

Your benefit calculation is slightly less straightforward. Firstly you will need to work out the applicable amount that applies to your family’s circumstances, and then work out your family’s weekly income. Then you will need to subtract your weekly income from your applicable amount, to arrive at your excess income amount.

Due to the complexities of these calculations we ask that you use our on-line benefit calculator to see if you will quality for benefit. However, we have demonstrated the calculation process once these earlier complex calculations have been done.
