If you are about to move home within the Council’s boundaries you will not need to make a new claim for Housing and Council Tax Benefit, instead all you will need to do is write to us explaining where you have moved to, the date you moved, and provide us with your new rent details.
In some circumstances we may ask you to complete a shortened application form if we need a significant amount of information about your new tenancy or we have reason to believe that you might have had other changes in your circumstances at the time you moved.
Assuming you provide all the details we need about your new tenancy we will be able to make a superseding decision about your benefit entitlement, however, if we do not have all the information to hand we will suspend your benefit in order to minimise any overpayment.
If we suspend your benefit we will write to you explaining why we have taken this action and the remedial action you need to take to get your claim de-suspended. If we do not hear from you within one calendar month of the date of this letter we may choose to terminate your benefit claim and you will then need to reapply if you want to claim benefit again.
We can only award Housing and Council Tax Benefit to people who live within the Council’s boundaries. If you move outside our boundaries we will terminate your benefit awards in line with the end of your liability. In some cases you might be awarded Housing Benefit to the end of the benefit week in which you moving out.
If you move into the Council’s area you will be requested to complete a full application for Housing and Council Tax Benefit before we will be able to award you any Housing and Council Tax Benefit. Assuming you claim within the first week of moving we will be able to pay your benefits in line with your liability starting, therefore please do not delay your claim.
Due to the introduction of Local Housing Allowance you can now establish the Local Housing Allowance rate applicable to your household’s circumstances before you sign your tenancy agreement. Dependant upon your households circumstances (composition, income and capital) the Local Housing Allowance rate will form the maximum amount of Housing Benefit that could receive. Please use our Local Housing Allowance Calculator to determine the amount of Housing Benefit you are likely to get before you sign your contract.
