Wrexham's main telephone exchange is SDSL (Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) Enabled
On the 17th April 2005 Wrexham's main telephone exchange was SDSL enabled, providing high bandwidth connections to the Internet.
SDSL is a form of broadband connection used to transmit high-bandwidth information over ordinary telephone lines into businesses and homes. With SDSL the data rate is the same in both directions (upstream and downstream) hence its symmetry.
Whereas ADSL delivers high speeds to users wishing to download large files, SDSL allows users to both send and receive large amounts of data at high speeds. This makes SDSL a more suitable form of broadband connectivity for small and medium sized businesses, remote office workers and teleworkers. SDSL technology also supports the development of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to connect geographically dispersed sites, as well as video conferencing and Voice over IP (VoIP) applications.
Over the next 6 months BT will be upgrading a further 500 exchanges to SDSL, and Wrexham's main exchange has become one of the first to be deployed in Wales.
BT have confirmed that this is a first step toward improving SDSL connections nationally and the associated benefits offered by high speed SDSL will bring more and more opportunities to businesses in Wales.
