Appointment of Lay Members to Serve on the Audit Committee

Do you want to know more about the way your council's finances operate? Could you offer a strong and independent voice on your local authority's financial affairs? Are you interested in local government and want to play a role in scrutinising how it works?

Wrexham County Borough is looking for individuals to sit as lay members on its Audit Committee. The Audit Committee is important because it:

  • Reviews, scrutinises and issues reports and recommendations in relation to the council's financial affairs.
  • Reviews, scrutinises and issues reports and recommendations on the authority’s risk management, internal control and corporate governance arrangements.
  • Oversees the audit arrangements and reviews its financial statements.
  • Oversee its audit arrangements and approve its financial statements.

In addition the committee will also undertake other functions as required.

We are inviting applications from anyone who would be interested in serving as a lay member on the Audit Committee. In order to be eligible an applicant should:

  • recognise and understand the value of the audit function.
  • have no business connection with the council.
  • not be active in local or national politics
  • have knowledge of how local government functions.
  • display independence of thinking and unbiased attitudes.

When making our appointment we will consider:

  • your political independence;
  • your ability to meet the time commitment involved;
  • your ability to understand and weigh up evidence;
  • your understanding of local government;
  • any relevant experience and knowledge.

A fee as prescribed by the Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales will be paid for attendance at meetings.
