"The
Crime and Disorder Act 1998 places new obligations on local authorities,
the police, police authorities, health authorities and probation committees
to co-operate in the development and implementation of a strategy for
tackling crime and disorder in their area
."
The main aim of the Act is to reduce levels of crime and disorder. To
advance this aim, the Act and the guidance sets out a number of key objectives.

Bringing together in partnership, representatives of the "responsible
authorities" (Police and Local Authority); and statutory consultees,
(Police Authority, Health Authority and Probation Committee) to effectively
drive forward the work on tackling local Crime and Disorder.

Placing responsibilities on the Police and Local Authority to jointly
conduct and publish an audit of local crime and disorder. To consult
locally on the basis of audit findings.

To develop and implement a local Crime and Disorder Reduction Strategy
based on the priority findings of the audit and the comments and views
generated from the consultation.

Set up mechanisms for the Audit and Strategy to be monitored and
evaluated annually and for the whole process to be repeated every
three years.
