Accommodation and Housing Support Strategy for Older People

Accommodation and Housing Support Strategy for Older People

Wrexham County Borough Council, working in partnership with partners in the health and voluntary sectors, has agreed a strategy looking specifically at the accommodation and housing support needs of older people.

The strategy has been developed over the past two years and provides a vision for the next twenty years, together with an action plan for the next three years.

The Strategy has five key areas. These are:

1. Accommodation

The strategy sees the continuing importance of sheltered housing but notes that much of what is currently available needs to be upgraded to meet the needs of today’s older people. In addition, it notes that there is a need to develop extra care housing, which will provide more support to people living in specially designed accommodation for older people.

2. Maintenance (Quality of Life)

The strategy notes the concerns older people have about getting help to maintain their home and identifies projects to help with this.  It also notes concern about the issues people have when adapting their homes if they develop disabilities and intends to make this easier and faster.

3. Support

A range of proposals are given to improve support given to people living in their own homes. This includes developing better information; looking at whether a warden-type scheme for people not living in sheltered homes can be developed; and improving our emergency response services.

4. Technology

The strategy acknowledges that there is a huge potential for technology to help support people living in their own homes (eg detectors to set off alerts if someone falls or wanders).  This needs to be developed in Wrexham County Borough.

5. Equality issues

The strategy notes that there are a wide range of older people in our society and they have different needs depending on their ethnic background, culture, sexuality and religion.  We need to do more to accommodate these needs, particularly as our local population of older people is changing in its make up.
