Candidates & Agents Information
Local Council Elections are held on a 4 yearly basis. The next election of all Wrexham County Borough Councillors will take place on Thursday 1st May 2008. Elections will also held on the same day for Town and Community Councils within Wrexham.
The Notice of Election will be published on 17 March and this marks the beginning of the election process Copies of all the important election notices will be published on this page.

County Borough Council Elections
Who can stand as a County Borough Candidate?
You are a legally eligible candidate if:
- You are at least 18 years of age and
- You are on the electoral register for the area of Wrexham County Borough and your home (for at least the last 12 months) is in the County Borough OR
- You work in the County Borough (and have done for the last 12 months) OR
- You own a property in the County Borough (and have done for the last 12 months)
You would be disqualified as a candidate if:
- You are bankrupt or
- You have had a criminal conviction in the past five years for which you were sentenced to three months or more in prison or
- You work for Wrexham County Borough Council (including being a teacher) or have a job which is politically restricted
Getting Nominated
A candidate for election needs to be nominated and needs to have it declared that he/she agrees to the nomination.
Candidates can be nominated through a political party but may stand in their own right as independent candidates. All Nomination forms must by law be submitted before NOON on 4th April.
The Returning Officer is encouraging all prospective Candidates to submit their completed Nomination papers as early as they can so any errors can be rectified in time. A list of the days and times when Candidates can submit their Nomination Forms is here
An election will take place if there are more nominations received than vacancies, otherwise the candidate(s) will be returned unopposed.
The necessary forms and further guidance are available from Electoral Services. A special telephone number, 01978 292076, has been set up specifically for use by Candidates and Agents to contact Electoral Services for more information.

Count
The verification of votes cast will be undertaken at the close of poll. Verification means checking that the number of ballot papers in the relevant ballot box matches the number of papers issued by a particular polling station. The counting of votes will be held the following day (2nd May). If you are elected you will receive information on, amongst other things, signing your declaration of acceptance of office. This is something that you MUST do before you can act as a councillor.

Community Council Elections - Who is standing in my area?
Who can stand as a Community Council Candidate?
To qualify as a candidate you must satisfy the following criteria on the day you are nominated and on polling day. You must:
- have attained the age of at least 18 years and
- be a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen,5 or a citizen of any other member state of the European Union
You must also meet at least one of the following four qualifications on the day you are nominated and on polling day:
- you are registered as a local government elector for the community council area in which you wish to stand, or
- you have occupied as owner or tenant any land or premises in the community or council area during the whole of the 12 months before the day you are nominated, or
- your main or only place of work during the last 12 months has been in the community council area, or
- you have lived in the community council area (or within 4.8 kilometres of it) during the whole of the last 12 months
You would be disqualified as a candidate if:
- You are bankrupt or
- You have had a criminal conviction in the past five years for which you were sentenced to three months or more in prison.
- You have been otherwise disqualified.
