Local Elections 2012 – Open Evening for Prospective Candidates

With just 6 months to go to the next County Borough Council elections, the Council has announced that it intends to hold an Open Evening for Prospective Candidates, here at The Guildhall, on Monday, 23 January 2012 at 6.00 pm.

Candidates for election often understand the broader local government picture but do not always have a grasp of how local authorities are structured or some of the practicalities of being a Councillor.  It is important that candidates understand the structure of their Council and its responsibilities for the community and, with this in mind, approval was given some time ago for Council Officers to arrange an Open Evening for Prospective Candidates to help introduce them to the world of local government in advance of the local elections next year.

In endorsing this proposal, Members felt that such an event should among other things:-

  • focus on the election process and the needs of the newly elected councillor;
  • explore issues new councillors need to know at the start of their careers in public life;
  • discuss councillors’ roles and responsibilities as ward representatives;
  • explain how councils work and how they are funded.

Although the event will be non-political, the political parties will be invited to alert their prospective candidates so that they may attend if they wish.

If you are thinking of standing at the next election and are interested in finding out more about the workings of the Council and the election process, then please do come along to the Open Evening.  If, at this stage, you require any further information, please contact:
