Petitioning for an Elected Mayor

Anyone can organise a petition to call for a referendum for a directly elected mayor. Upon receiving a valid petition, a Council must hold a binding referendum on proposals for executive arrangements involving a directly elected mayor.

The petition organiser is responsible for collecting the required number of signatures and submitting the petition to the council. Once the petition has been submitted the petition organiser will be the person with whom the council will correspond.

Petitions may be submitted only during a specific six-month period starting twelve months before the ordinary local government elections. The next period will be between 3 May and 2 November 2011.

In Wales, a petition is valid if it is submitted within the petition period and contains the signatures of at least 10% of the local government electors in the area. This number of electors is referred to as the “verification figure”.
