European Funding Overview

There are a number of different types of European Funding available for a range of purposes across the County Borough of Wrexham. The majority of funds distributed by the European Union is known as Structural Funds. There are three Structural funds which will benefit the Wrexham Borough area these are ESF, ERDF, EAGGF.

Objective 3

European Social Funding (ESF) under the Objective 3 Programme is available to support projects in the Wrexham County Borough area. This fund is primarily concerned with investment in people with the aim of improving the knowledge and skills of individuals to enhance employment prospects or obtain more skilled employment.

Urban II

The West Wrexham Urban II Programme was a European funded regeneration initiative which focused on the development of an entrepreneurial and participating community. A total of £16million (including £6.8 million from the European Regional Development Fund) was spent between 2000 and 2006 to support new and existing businesses in West Wrexham to overcome the barriers that prevent people from accessing employment opportunities.

EQUAL

EQUAL is a North East Wales Programme which focuses on Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham which aims to promote new ways of combating all forms of discrimination and inequalities in relation to the labour market through trans-national co-operation.

LEADER +

LEADER + is funded solely through the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF), and all rural areas are eligible to apply. The new Programme will fit within the strategic framework established by the Rural Development Plan, and complement activities funded under Objective 1, 2 and 3.

Objective 2

The Objective 2 Programme is a European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Initiative offers support for the economic regeneration of the area around Chirk, the Ceiriog Valley and Llangollen Rural. Support is available under the following priorities, Developing Competitive and Sustainable SMEs and Sustainable Rural Development.

Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) - link to external site

The primary objective of the Welsh European Funding Office is to ensure that Wales derives the maximum possible benefit from the European Structural Funds over the period 2000-06. They are part of the Welsh Assembly Government's Economic Development and Transport Group. Projects are delivered by a range of Partnership bodies in the public, private and voluntary sector

INTERREG III - link to external site

INTERREG III is a European Community Initiative to promote transnational co-operation on spatial planning by encouraging the harmonious, balanced development of the European territory. The aim is to ensure that national borders are not a barrier to balanced development and the integration of Europe, and to strengthen co-operation to their mutual advantage. The Initiative runs from 2000 - 2006.

Culture 2000 - link to external site

Culture 2000 is the European Union's funding programme that is specifically aimed at arts and culture. The Culture 2000 programme aims to contribute to the promotion of a cultural area common to the European peoples. It supports co-operation between creative artists, cultural operators, private and public promoters.

Leonardio Da Vinci - link to external site

Leonardo da Vinci is the European Community's vocational training programme. It encourages collaboration between organisations involved in vocational training, aiming to improve the quality of training provision, developing the skills and mobility of the workforce, stimulate innovation and enhance the competitiveness of European Industry.
