Town Gears up to Celebrate St David’s Day with a Market and Parade

Preparations are well underway for Wrexham’s eagerly anticipated St David’s Day celebrations.

The Council’s Economic Development Department is organising a craft and produce market in Queen’s Square, as well as an official parade through the town centre.

The market will take place on Queen’s Square from 10am – 4pm on Saturday 27 February, with 60 stalls selling a range of crafts and all sorts of food. As well as olives, cold pressed Greek oils, fruit, nuts and Middle Eastern sweetmeats, there will be plenty of local produce including cakes, cheese, hand made pies, jam, chutney, freshly cooked Welsh cakes, meat and, of course, some excellent sausages.

The prestigious ‘Wrexham Champion Sausage Competition’ will take place during the morning. The competition has become a firm favourite in the town’s calendar and sees butchers from across the borough competing for the title of Wrexham’s champion sausage-maker! The results of the competition will be announced at around 1.30pm.

Visitors to the market will be able pop into Caffi Florence, usually to be found at Loggerheads Country Park, for coffee and some tasty treats and children will enjoy the fairground rides and a very special puppet show called ‘Toby and the Sausages’.

Last year’s market attracted about 3,000 visitors and the organisers are hoping for an even better turn out this year.

The St David’s Day parade on Monday 1 March will start at 2pm from Tuttle Street, near the pay and display car park off the St Giles Link Road, weaving its way through York Street, High Street, Hope Street, Argyle Arch and Rhosddu Road to the main entrance of the Guildhall on Llwyn Isaf, where the National Anthem will be sung. The proceedings should be over by 2.30pm. All are welcome to join the parade or just to come along for the singing on Llwyn Isaf.
