Road Marks Half Way Stage

The programmed construction period for the Wrexham Industrial Estate Access Roads Scheme is now over half way complete. Wrexham Council’s Executive Board Members will receive a presentation at the start of next Tuesday’s Executive Board Meeting to update them on progress to date.

The southern section - from Cross Lanes to Five Fords - is expected to be complete well ahead of programme, with the northern section also still on target, for completion ahead of August 19th this year.

The scheme, funded by Welsh Government, is also currently within the budget.

The Industrial Estate Access Roads Scheme comprises two distinct access roads.

First, the northern route, which runs from Borras roundabout in the north to Bryn Lane roundabout in the south, where it connects with the Estate’s ring road adjacent to the JCB factory. This route is approximately 3.2km or 2 miles long and is dual carriageway all the way.

Second, the southern route, which runs from A525 at Cross Lanes in the south to the Estate at Five Fords. This route is approximately 1.2 km, or ¾ mile long and is single carriageway, except for the short section between the two proposed Five Fords roundabouts.

The Main Works Contractor is Birse Civils Ltd. Birse Civils’ design partner is Gifford, part of Ramboll.

A key element of the programme covering the northern section was to construct what will ultimately become the combined footway/cycleway/agricultural access alongside A534 Holt Road. Since the traffic switch, on 22nd October last year, all A534 Holt Road traffic is now temporarily running on this route, enabling the work on the permanent dual carriageway A534 to be carried out without traffic.

On Tuesday, Members will also be shown the most recent aerial photographs - illustrating the progress to date on both northern and southern access routes.

Councillor David Bithell, Deputy Leader of the Council and Lead Member for Environment and Transport said:

“I am very pleased to see the good progress being made on the Industrial Estate Access Roads Scheme, and look forward to completion of the northern and southern routes by late summer this year. Access to the industrial Estate will be significantly improved, bringing high standard dual carriageway access all the way from A483 in the north to the ring road at Bryn Lane, and vastly improved access from A525 at Cross Lanes in the south to the Estate at Five Fords.

This will help to make the Industrial Estate more attractive for inward investors and help existing businesses be more competitive. Journey times to and from the Estate will become more reliable for industrialists and employees alike.”
