Chef Jamie gives St Mary’s cooking skills his seal of approvalA Wrexham primary school’s cooking skills have been given the thumbs up from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.
St Mary's Catholic Primary School triumphed in the primary category at the Active Kids Get Cooking 2010 Awards ceremony, which was held in London.
Pupil’s in Year’s 3 & 4 wowed Jamie Oliver and the other judges with their Welsh Feast of River Dee fishcakes and Welsh mini muffins. Pupils from Years 5 and 6 also entered the competition.
The theme of this year’s primary competition was to create recipes for a ‘sustainable spread’ and the school beat schools from all over the UK to the award. The school also triumphed in the Wales category.
The school decided on creating a ‘Welsh feast’ for Polish visitors from Raciborz, which is twinned with the County Borough.
All the food for the project was sourced locally and pupil’s families were allowed to get involved. Meat was supplied for local butchers; eggs were supplied from hens kept by parents. And even the fish was locally sourced after been caught by a parent in the River Dee.
St Mary’s pupils, Michael James Roberts and Caitlin Hughes were selected by fellow classmates to go to the awards ceremony in London alongside the class teacher , Linda Sawyer and Headteacher Kathy Jones. The judges were impressed by St Mary’s efforts, especially their willingness and lengths they would go to source local produce.
Kathy Jones, Headteacher at St Mary’s Catholic Primary said:
“Everyone at the school is delighted to win this award. This was a project that involved the local community, so I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts. The pupils worked very hard on this project, creating a feast that was not only sustainable and locally sourced, but really tasty as well.”
The school received £500 as part of their prize, which will be used to buy cooking equipment as well as taking out the pupils for a celebratory meal.
