The first residents have moved into one of the new affordable homes, purchased using grant funding from the Welsh Assembly Government. The Howell family received the keys to their new property on Victoria Gardens in Wrexham last week. The house is one of 17 properties bought by local housing associations to deliver more affordable housing to people in Wrexham.
Earlier this year, Wrexham was awarded a £1.46million grant from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Strategic Capital Investment Fund (SCIF). The money was used to provide more affordable homes for people in Wrexham by purchasing newly built homes throughout the County Borough. By working in partnership with registered social landlords, 17 rented properties have been made available for Wrexham residents.
As well as the Howell’s new home, there are three other properties on Victoria Gardens. The other properties are located in the Penley and Gwersyllt area.
The authority works with Pennaf Housing Association, Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd, Wales & West and other housing associations to help deliver affordable housing in Wrexham.
Cllr Mark Pritchard, Lead Member for Housing and Planning, said:
"This is excellent news and an excellent example of how, by working in partnership with local organisations, we can deliver more affordable housing for the people of Wrexham. I would like to thank the Minister, Jocelyn Davies, and the Assembly Government for the funding which recognises the need to provide affordable housing for local people during these difficult times. Providing appropriate affordable housing is a corporate priority for Wrexham Council and this boost to the local economy comes at a time when it is most needed."
Mike Jenkins, Principal Housing Standards and Strategy Officer said:
“Everyone has the right to an affordable home. The current economic situation means there is an increased demand for affordable housing and these 17 properties will help to meet this need by delivering affordable, good quality homes throughout the County Borough. “
