Wrexham's 'Best Kept Village' crowned

Chirk has been crowned Wrexham's Best Kept Village for the second year running with Llangollen Rural coming a very close second.

The competition was held as part of the Tidy Town and Wales in Bloom Initiative and was open to all community councils within Wrexham County Borough. Five communities entered the competition; these were Rhos, Brymbo, Gresford, Chirk and Llangollen Rural (which consists of Garth, Froncysyllte and Trevor). The entries were asked to produce a portfolio displaying photographs of their efforts to improve their community.

The judging looked at all aspects of Environmental issues within the community and the outcome was not just about floral displays. It included making the area a pleasant place to live, its visual appearance and cleanliness, how much time and effort local residents put into their gardens, involvement with local businesses, planting schemes, and demonstrating a more sustainable use of shrubs and perennials which will not need replanting year on year.

The competition was judged by Craig Youens and Zoe-Jade Gardener, Officers from the streetscene section in the Council and by using a points scoring system.
The judges stated that it was good to see a high standard of entries, with the local communities working with local businesses, environmental and community groups consisting of both school children and voluntary organisations (such as beavers, cubs, scouts, brownies and guides).

The overall winner, Chirk, demonstrated good aspects of community involvement, cleanliness, and floral displays. The Chirk entry was successful because of the efforts of a number of organisations and groups including: Chirk Community Council, Chirk Community Forum, Chirk Marina, Friends of Chirk Station, and local business such as Cadbury’s and Kronospan.

Chirk took the award ahead of Llangollen Rural by the narrowest of margins. Llangollen Rural had also put a lot of effort had been put into their entry and the judges commended the community for their work.

In third place was Rhos who had again worked very hard in their area.

As a result of the decision, Chirk Community can now proudly display the sign declaring it has won the Best Village/ Community Award for 2010 and £250 will be donated to the Community Council for environmental improvements within their area.

The runner up will also received £150 also for environmental improvements.

Cllr David Bithell Lead Member for Environment and Transport said,

"Congratulations to the winners Chirk and Llangollen Rural ward for coming a very close second. The work both communities have done has been fantastic and I wish to thank the many volunteers in making their village a better place to live.
