Home Boarding Licence Introduced

The UK has recently experienced an increase in the number of small businesses geared around the service of ‘home boarding’ pets. Home boarding is generally considered to be the provision of overnight accommodation, and food, for an animal in a private dwelling which is not its own home in exchange for payment.

There are a number of reasons why pet owners choose to use home boarding facilities. Their pet may be ill, elderly or may not have previously responded well to a traditional establishment. Home boarding offers a ‘home from home’ environment which some pet owners prefer. Wrexham County Borough Council has identified that there are a number of home boarding establishments operating in and around the Wrexham area and consequently it has adopted nationally agreed licence conditions.

Andy Lewis Chief Housing and Public Protection Officer commented “The licence will ensure that in the same way as traditional kennels and catteries, these businesses offer a consistent standard of welfare and care. Contact will be made with those establishments already identified (initially only those boarding cats and/or dogs) and we will be advising owners on what they need to do to meet the licence conditions.” Mr Lewis stresses “Licensing is not intended to involve informal private arrangements between friends and family to look after one another’s pets, but rather ‘commercial’ establishments who actively advertise their home boarding services to the general public.”

If you are such an establishment, please contact Ella Povey from the Animal Welfare Team on 01978 813775 to arrange an informal visit.
