Brymbo Pool Transformation Complete

A fun day is to be held on 6th June in Brymbo to celebrate parts of the former old steelworks site and reservoir completing its transformation into a parkland area and fishing pool for use by the local community.

The area around Brymbo pool now has new footpaths and gates, car parking space and angling platforms for people with disabilities following investment of over £20,000.

There is also new seating and a new community notice board to advertise local events and which depicts the rich industrial heritage and wildlife of the area.

The Brymbo area has suffered from industrial decline since the early 1980s with steelmaking, coal mining and mineral industries all closing down in the area.

But the last two years has seen massive improvements, mainly by redeveloping the former Brymbo steelworks site. Development of the pool – used by the Brymbo Angling Club since the 1970s - and the surrounding area marks another important step in the area’s regeneration.

David Edwell, North Wales Area Manager for Environment Agency Wales, said: “Angling is easily the UK’s favourite pastime – enjoyed by around four million people from all sectors of society. We know that as many people again would like to try it out.”

“We want to enhance the social and economic benefits to communities from angling, provide more opportunities to fish, enable more people to go fishing and for our fisheries to perform better. The developments in Brymbo help us with all of this.”

Roy Evans from Brymbo Angling Club, said: “Obviously we would like to attract more members to the Angling Club but we would also like to encourage local residents to come and enjoy this space which is right on their doorstep. We also hope that the local schools can use the site as an educational resource, increase the numbers of species at the pool and create a safe habitat for all wildlife.”

The project has been supported by Wrexham County Borough Council and Local Member Cllr Paul Rogers, said, “The Brymbo Pool improvements and Community Fun Day event is a good example of how small local groups can make a big change within their community.”

The project was funded by Environment Agency Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government with additional contributions from Wrexham County Borough Council, Brymbo Community Council, Broughton Partnership Board and the West Wrexham Partnership. Further contributions were made from the Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW) and the Welsh Assembly Government’s Community Facilities and Activities programme.

The Fun Day on Saturday 6 June, hosted by Brymbo Angling Club and Brymbo Sports Association, includes outdoor crafts, stalls from community groups, a tug-of-war, heritage walks, a balloon race and angling taster sessions provided by Environment Agency Wales experts.

Fish in the pool include Perch, Bream, Carp, Barbel, Tench and Rudd while the surrounding area also supports populations of toads, wildfowl and grass snakes.

The parkland is located on Waterside Way and further information is available from Hayley Morgan, 01978 722988
