Wrexham Council Wins Civic Society Award

Wrexham Council has been recognised by the Wrexham Area Civic Society for making a significant contribution to the environment.

The Society’s annual event awarded two developments carried out by the Leisure, Libraries and Culture department at its awards evening at the Gresford Memorial Hall last month. The Society presented certificates to Wrexham Library and the St Giles Way Sculpture.

The re-modelled Wrexham Library was given the overall award in the renovation and refurbishment category ahead of a further three building projects, which earned commendations. The refurbishment, which was completed in March 2010, has greatly altered the look and ambience of the library and provided an opportunity to extend and enhance the range of services available to the public.

The St. Giles Way Sculpture is an iconic symbol of the heritage of Wrexham, which adds to the local area. The judges commended the artistic sculpture as a “significant contribution to the quality of the environment” and recognised that the landscaping of the site has now reached a maturity that earned this commendation.

Councillor Bob Dutton,OBE, Lead Member for Communities and Performance said:

“I am very pleased that these developments have been recognised by the prestigious Wrexham Area Civic Society awards. They highlight the contribution of cultural and library provision to the local environment and to improving the quality of life for people living in Wrexham. The work of the Civic Society in monitoring the built environment contributes to high quality developments such as Wrexham Library and the St Giles Way sculpture”.
