Pupils at Ysgol Clywedog began their Summer term in their new-look buildings today, bringing to a close a three year, multi-million pound project to re-organise secondary education in the town.

Officers and staff have been working hard to ensure the school on Ruthin Road is ready for pupils returning from their Easter break, in time for the opening today (Tuesday, April 12th).

Pupils were moved to temporary accommodation on Penymaes Avenue last September whilst further construction work was carried out by contractors Birse Build. Pupils at Rhosnesni High School have already settled into their brand new school.

The £22.5 million project provides computer suites, technology rooms, newly refurbished sports halls and improved outdoor sports provision.

Leader of Wrexham Council, Cllr Aled Roberts said that the opening of Ysgol Clywedog was an important day for secondary education in Wrexham. He said:

"The Council has worked hard to ensure that innovative educational projects are brought to life. Councillors had a vision that would bring about significant changes to education in Wrexham and secondary school re-organisation is just another phase in that vision. Along the way we have learnt some lessons with regard to the management of large projects. Education remains a key priority for the Council and we believe that improved buildings and facilities will help us to improve educational attainment for our children and young people in the future. Whilst one major project comes to an end I am very excited about the prospect of further re-developments that will further improve the learning environment for our children."

Strategic Director, Terry Garner:

"The LEA is delighted that Ysgol Clywedog has been able to open on time today and that the transition period has gone well. The success of the re-organisation scheme, bringing as it does new facilities and enhanced course opportunities for pupils, is a tribute to the determination of the Council and the schools. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff, parents, governors and pupils for their patience during this complex project. We would also like to thank the school and LEA staff for their tremendous efforts. I am sure they will all agree that the new building on Ruthin Road will provide excellent modern, facilities. We wish them well for the future."

Headteacher Jeannette Smith said:

"This is a very exciting time for our school, as we take the staff, pupils, parents and governors on another journey to provide excellent educational facilities, not just for now but for future generations. Although there has been the inevitable disruption during these essential works it has certainly been worth it. Contractors and staff have been very busy over the Easter period to get the school ready for its re-opening and we go into the summer term full of enthusiasm that our school will go from strength to strength. We look forward to a very bright future."
