Severe Weather Update 11am Wednesday 6 January 2010

The current situation is that all snow clearing, gritting and ploughing has been carried out through the night and is continuing today.  The majority of priority 1 routes are now clear as are key routes including the roads in and around the Wrexham Industrial Estate.  Side roads are being treated with all available resources.

Due to the adverse weather conditions all refuse collections in Wrexham County Borough have been suspended for Wednesday 6th Jan and the resources will be deployed to snow clearance operations. Those households who missed their bin collection today [Wednesday 6 January] have been advised to put both bins out for collection next week.  Given the recent changes to bin collections over the festive period residents are advised to check their calendar and bin sticker first in order to make sure that bins are put out on the correct day next week.

Contact Wrexham is open and is providing a full service but is receiving  a high volume of calls. Members of the public who are not getting through as quickly as hoped are asked to visit the Council’s’ website on www.wrexham.gov.uk/english/events/severe_weather.htm where information on the situation is continually updated.

The crematorium is providing a normal service today.

75 of the county borough's 77 schools are closed or partially closed. The two schools open today are: The Rofft CP School, Marford, and Rhosddu CP, Wrexham. Parents are advised to continue to check the Council’s website www.wrexham.gov.uk/snow for updates and to tune in to the local radio station, Heart FM on 103.4.

Public transport - some bus services are operating and Arriva is providing a limited service (main roads only) and GHA trying to get buses out of their depot to commence some services.  Information on those bus routes which are operating is available on the website on www.wrexham.gov.uk/bus

All Car Parks are open currently but motorists and pedestrians are advised to take care as we continue to ensure that routes to and from are kept are clear as possible.

Registration of births deaths and marriages are open and working normal hours and all town centre public receptions are staffed and open.

Adult Social Care is being carefully managed to protect our vulnerable people.

Day Centre services:

Clients have been advised to remain at home and not to make any journeys which may put them at risk. Emergency arrangements are in place for those clients who still require day centre support this has been centralised into Haulfan where there is adequate staff to cover the service.

Arrangements have been made to ensure that vulnerable clients who normally receive a meal at the day centre have one delivered to their home.

Contact and Assessment Team

No staff have managed to get into work, but Social workers from care management Teams are providing front-line cover until staff can get in.

Home Care

This service is coping incredibly well, no calls are being missed, carers have come in off annual leave and staff are walking to their calls. We have three 4x4s  dropping carers of at locations where we have vulnerable clients which are not accessible using normal vehicles.  A key issue for this service will be to get more drivers to maintain 4x4 cover throughout the day.

Independent Sector

Contracts Team have been phoning Independent Providers and the feedback is that services are currently being maintained no calls are being missed.

Social Work Teams

Cover is available in all teams and managers are monitoring the ongoing situation

Mental Health Services

The Head of service has taken steps to ensure adequate cover is in place to ensure key services are maintained.
