Eagles Meadow Site Handed to Developers

The Eagles Meadow site was formally handed over to developers Wilson Bowden Developments at the beginning of this month.

The former car park and old Asda site will be transformed over the next two years to produce an exciting retail, leisure and residential development that will transform the Smithfields area of Wrexham town centre. When completed the £110 million scheme will feature a 90,000 square foot Debenhams department store, a 24 lane ten pin bowling alley, over 30 other retail units, residential apartments and a wide choice of cafes and bars. A number of retailers and leisure operators are currently in discussion with the developers and provision has been made for around 1,000 car parking spaces.

Speaking at the handover ceremony Mr Nick Richardson, Managing Director of Wilson Bowden Developments, said: “We are delighted to be involved in such a prestigious project and are looking forward to develop our working ties with Wrexham County Borough Council. This is a flagship project for all the working partners and today is a real milestone towards its completion.”

Cllr Bob Dutton OBE, Deputy Leader of WCBC and lead member for Economic Prosperity, added: “A long period of work and planning has been involved in getting to this stage. I am definitely pleased by this project and believe it will be of great economic benefit to the local economy. The new retail and leisure offers it will bring to the area will further boost our reputation as a shopping centre for the whole region.”

Work on site will begin this month and a temporary introduction of a one-way system around the perimeter of the site has been introduced which will allow new access roads to be built and the ultimate demolition of the flyover. It is anticipated that the development will be open in 2008 and bring new businesses and job opportunities to the town.
