The team behind a £7.7million Extra Care Scheme for older people in Plas Madoc, Wrexham attended a special event to mark the start of work on the innovative development.
Members of the Project Board, as well as guests from other partner agencies joined Wrexham Mayor Councillor James Kelly, at a celebration event on site organised by Clwyd Alyn Housing Association, part of the Pennaf Housing Group. Clwyd Alyn will be managing the new Extra Care scheme in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council. Contractors, Wates Living Space, who have offices in Chirk, have already started demolition work of a former Llys Madoc Elderly Persons’ Home to make way for this exciting new development of independent apartments, combining housing with care and support.
The new development will be made up of more than 50 self-contained one and two bedroom apartments with high quality communal facilities such as an on-site restaurant and hairdressing salon for residents. There will also be a top quality community café in the scheme open to members of the public so that residents can continue to feel at the heart of community life.
Mr Glyn Jones, Chairman of Clwyd Alyn Housing Association said at the start of work celebration that the scheme was a result of vision and dedication of all those who had been involved. “It is fantastic to see work get underway at what is set to be a superb facility helping older people live full, independent lives and I would also like to thank local people for their support for helping this vision become a reality.”
The Mayor of Wrexham County Borough Council Councillor James Kelly added: “It’s great to mark the start of work on the new Extra Care Scheme which will be a major asset to providing top quality housing options for older people in the future.
Cllr Joan Lowe, Wrexham County Borough Council’s Lead Member for Social Care and Health said: “This is a great step forward in the provision of high quality care within the County Borough. Only right that our older people should live and enjoy the most up to date facilities available to help them maintain their independent lives."
All apartments will be wheelchair accessible and the scheme will have the added benefit of extensive communal facilities, together with person centred care and support to meet individual needs, promoting independent living for older people in a safe and supported environment. The total cost of the project will be £7.7million, which is being funded by the Pennaf Group through private finance, and also as a result of a successful bid by the partnership to the Welsh Assembly Government.
