Help on hand for young people and their families

A programme which aims to strengthen young people’s relationship with their parents is inviting local families to take part.

The Strengthening Families Programme helps parents build upon their existing skills in supporting their children to have a good experience of their teenage years. It also helps young people develop the skills needed to handle peer pressure, increase self confidence and set goals for the future.

Strengthening Families is a 7 week programme for any family living in Wrexham with young people aged between 10 and 14 years of age.

Parents and Young People meet in separate groups for the first hour, and then come together in the second hour for a family session.

The group is run by people from a variety of different agencies and backgrounds, who already work with young people and their families.

The Strengthening Families Programme is part of a research trial, being examined by Cardiff University to see if the programme can have a long term effect on the way families function and prevent young people from misusing alcohol, tobacco and drugs.

Lucie Janková, Parenting Network Co-ordinator for Wrexham Council said:

“Becoming a teenager can be a challenging time for young people and parents alike. The Strengthening Families Programme works with families to meet these challenges head on, in a nurturing and supportive environment.

“We have already seen the positive impact this programme has had on local families. It offers parents and guardians advice on how to effectively discipline and guide their children whilst giving young people a chance to consider their future goals, with an increased appreciation of their family.
