Wrexham's Country Parks Awarded 4 Green FlagWrexham's country parks are continuing to gain national recognition as news comes that the Civic Trust has awarded 4 of the county borough's parks Green Flag Status. style.
Ty Mawr, Bellevue, Alyn Waters and Nant Mill have all reached the high standards set by the Civic Trust and all are planning to build on their success to make sure the flags stay in their possession.
The Green Flag Award Scheme is the national standards for parks and green spaces. Winners vary from Victorian Parks and town centre gardens to nature reserves, country parks and cemeteries. Sites must be judged to be welcoming, safe and well maintained with the strong involvement of the local community.
The scheme started in 1996 as a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards, creating a benchmark of excellence in recreational areas. This year 19 awards were made in Wales with Wrexham and Cardiff topping the table with four each.
Cllr Dave Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said:
"This is excellent news for Wrexham. Our country parks are amongst the finest in Wales if not the UK. In 2005 we had no green flags, now we have four which is a testament to the hard work of the rangers in setting the high standards necessary to be awarded Green Flag status. I hope everyone takes the opportunity this summer to visit one of the parks to see for themselves the outstanding contribution they make to the quality of life in the county borough. Congratulations everyone and well done!"
