Impact Roadshow

A new Road Show aptly named "Impact" which graphically demonstrates the damage that can be inflicted to the human body during a car crash was launched on Queen's Square, Wrexham on Saturday 3rd September.

The Road Show is the first of its kind in Wales and is the result of close partnership working between Wrexham County Borough Council's Road Safety Section and Wrexham Fire Station, who both recognised that more needed to be done to promote in car safety.

The Road Safety team have actively supported the project with advice, materials and staff and, through the Welsh Assembly Government's Local Safety Grant scheme, has secured funding to purchase a low loader trailer, two manikins and a trauma kit which will be visiting local schools, events and commercial outlets promoting all aspects of Road Safety but in particular the use of seatbelts.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service have provided the essential expertise and experience in dealing with the causes and consequences of a collision and by pooling their resources in this way a new tool in the fight to ensure car safety is ready to take to the road!

The event runs from 11.30 to 3.00 pm with accident reconstructions being staged during the day at approximately 11.45 am and 2 pm. Members of the public are invited to view either of these demonstrations as well as listen to the presentations, which will be held throughout the day.

The presentation is based around a crashed car, which has been donated by The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and has previously been used in crash testing. Inside the vehicle are two manikins representing the driver and a young child in a car seat. The manikins will display the types of injuries that can be sustained during a collision without seatbelts even at low speed.

Staff from the Road Safety Section and the Fire Service will be on hand during the day to offer advice on all aspects of Road Safety.

Launching the event the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Mike Edwards, said that it was very encouraging to see such an excellent example of partnership working and hoped that drivers take on board the valuable lessons that can be learned from the demonstrations.

Paul Whybro County Safety Manager for Wrexham Fire Service said,

"We are delighted that we are able to work in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council to improve the education of drivers in the area. The Impact Road Show is an extremely useful tool that graphically shows the injuries sustained by a casualty in a road traffic collision as well as the damage to vehicles involved."

Martin Wright, Wrexham Council's Chief Transportation and Asset Management Officer said:

"This has been an excellent opportunity to provide a valuable service to schools and organisations throughout the County Borough. Wrexham Council is actively working to improve road safety and this high profile campaign will be an invaluable support in that work."
