Live 8 - Queen's Square 2nd July 2005

Organisers of the Live 8 event in Queen's Square Wrexham have released further details about arrangements for the screening on Queen's Square.

Car Parking arrangements and Road Closures

The event will be aimed at a family audience and the acts taking part are set to appeal to all ages. The Wrexham event will coincide with the start of the Hyde Park London concert at 2pm with a scheduled end time of 8pm, although some flexibility to the end time is expected.

There will be an alcohol ban in force in Wrexham's Queens Square and no-one will be allowed onto the square with alcohol of any description.

An area has been designated for those people with disabilities and will be manned by stewards to ensure that only bona fida persons and their carers are allowed in. Access from Llwyn Isaf to the event for those with disabilities will be via the path between the Library and the Guildhall. Disabled parking spaces are available throughout town centre car parks.

Screen-concert goers can access Queens Square via Chester Road/Llwyn Isaf and are asked to use the path around the green towards the Lambpit Street Council Offices and the Old Library.

Lost children will be cared for by qualified staff at Ty Henbals and there will be first aiders on hand for anyone requiring medical help provided by St John's Ambulance.

Stewards will be on hand throughout the day and they will be happy to advise people of where amenities such as toilets and refreshment areas are.

World famous acts including Robbie Williams, Madonna, Sir Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Sir Elton John, Keane, Joss Stone and REM will appear on a giant screen in Queen’s Square on July 2nd after it was announced that Wrexham will screen the Live 8 concert.

Sir Bob Geldfof said:

"With the fantastic response from the British public, with 2 million people texting in for Live8 tickets, it's great news that the BBC is putting up screens in public spaces in 15 towns and cities. It will be a celebration of a great day with people watching on TV, online as well as at these screens."

Alan Watkin, Chief Leisure, Libraries and Culture Officer, said:

"This one off event will be shown on a special temporary screen the broadcasters are bringing to Wrexham. As the only site in Wales for such an outside live broadcast Wrexham is in a unique position.

"The screening will give the local community an opportunity to experience the excitement and thrill of seeing this momentous concert in the very heart of the town centre. This will be non-ticketed event and we very much hope that those wishing to see the concert will be able to combine their shopping and leisure activities with watching the concert on Queen's Square. No seating will be made available but we will be putting a dedicated viewing area towards the front of the screen for those with disabilities and there will be an alcohol ban in place on the day."

Giant screens will also be put up in Birmingham, Hull, Manchester, Liverpool, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Belfast and Leeds.
