Back To a Brand New School
Pupils in Rhos have returned to a brand new school this week as Ysgol Maes Y Mynydd opened its doors for the first time.
The new 360 place school has opened following a £2.9 million refurbishment which included the amalgamation of three schools Ysgol Y Rhos, Ysgol Y Wern and Ysgol Ponciau.
The completion of Maes Y Mynydd brings to an end a £6.9 million project to reorganise and redevelop schools in the Rhos area.
A brand new Welsh –medium school Ysgol ID Hooson was opened on the former Pant Brickworks site in the village last September.
Maes Y Mynydd has been built to the same high standard offering first class facilities and has the same eco friendly theme with a ground source heat pump that draws heat from the earth to provide heating and hot water as well as solar panels on the roof tops.
Leader of Wrexham Council, Aled Roberts, said: “I’m delighted that this project has been brought in on time and on budget. The council has changed the way it manages these projects so that we can work within the tight budgets we are given, to provide value for money and first class facilities.”
He added: “It is another important stage in our mission to improve educational standards for children living in the County Borough. Importantly for the Rhos area our children are now taught in wonderful facilities.”
Jan Rowlands, the former headteacher at Ysgol Y Rhos, will take up the reins as headteacher of the new school and will be there to greet the children on their first day next Wednesday.
She said: “I’m delighted with the new school. The facilities are fantastic and we can all now look forward to teaching and learning in an environment that will help our pupils achieve their full potential.”
