New Mayor for WrexhamCllr Arwel Gwynn Jones and his wife Mair have been installed as the new Mayor and Mayoress of Wrexham at a special ceremony at the Guildhall.
Cllr Jones has been a county borough councillor for the Pant ward since 1999 and is a retired Headteacher. He is also the vice chairman of the Welsh Joint Education committee and a qualified Estyn Inspector and President of the National Association of headteachers.
During his speech the Mayor made reference to the special privilege that had been presented to him and his wife which he said is the honour of spending the next year as the Mayor and Mayoress of Wrexham. Members of the council were thanked for their support in nominating them to the positions.
The Mayor was brought up in Rhos and comes from a family line of coal miners. Both his and his wife's fathers and grandfathers were miners and he is very proud of his Welsh heritage.
A first language Welsh speaker he has spent many years ensuring that children in Wales have the opportunity to learn Welsh. During his speech he said that he wanted this to be the "Year of the Child" with funds from the Mayor's charity being distributed between Hope House and other children's charities.
Borras Councillor Jim Kelly and his wife Elizabeth were installed as Deputy Mayor and Mayoress at the same ceremony.
