TV Star to Launch Rural Community Heritage Project

Neil Oliver, the Scottish historian and archaeologist best known for presenting the BBC TV Series “Coast”, will launch Wrexham’s very own Rural Community Heritage project next month (October).

Neil will be the guest speaker at the initiative’s launch event which will be a free Community Heritage Day that will take place at the Brymbo Enterprise Centre on Saturday October 25th from 11am. The day will feature an archaeology dig, guided tours of the local heritage site and exciting medieval re-enactments from the Samhain group. There will also be exhibitions from local history groups and societies that will show some of the rich history and heritage of Wrexham County Borough.

Karen Harris, Community Heritage Officer with Northern Marches Cymru who leads on the project, says: “I hope people will take advantage of this unique opportunity to become involved in this new Community Heritage project. We want to develop and support new ideas with groups and communities for various heritage projects and exhibitions. These local histories can then be preserved and enjoyed by future generations, as well as providing potential tourism opportunities.”

The Brymbo event is just the first of a number of events and activities that make up the overall Rural Community Heritage project that will run until February 2011.

The Rural Community Heritage project is one of 28 schemes that have secured over £5m of funding as part of the Rural Development Plan. The 28 projects were put together by a variety of organisations and community groups and were co-ordinated and assisted through the rigorous application process by Northern Marches Cymru on behalf of the Economic Development Department of Wrexham County Borough Council.

The current rural development plan is to run until February 2011 and has a total value of £5.2m, made up of £3.7m grant funding through Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) with the remainder coming from cash match funding or volunteer time.
