Wrexham's New Cemetery Officially Opened

Wrexham's new cemetery at Plas Acton Road, Pandy, has been officially opened by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr David Griffiths. The historic occasion was marked by the planting of a flowering Cherry Tree.

The need for a new cemetery for Wrexham was identified as far back as 1999 and since then Wrexham Council have acquired suitable land and obtained planning permission for the new site.

The site has room for 1500 full size graves for up to three interments, 300 cremated remains plots and 300 infant graves. It is likely to be in use for the next 50 years based on the current rates of usage with the first interment probably occurring during the first week of June.

Car parking will be provided inside the cemetery gates and extensive landscaping will take place at the site at the end of this year which will include native and specimen trees. It will be open between 9.00 and 6.00 on weekdays and between 10.00 and 06.00 on Saturday, Sundays and bank Holidays until 31st October when it will close at 16.00 on all days.

Cllr Pat Jeffares, the Council's representative on the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities, said:

"The Cemeteries and Crematoria services are an award winning service who provide an extremely high standard of service to visitors to its current cemetery and crematorium. I am certain that this excellent standard will be maintained as the service moves into the new cemetery.

Cllr David Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said:

" I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff for their commitment to finding and securing a new cemetery site in Wrexham that will be in use for the next 50 years."
