Grant still available to boost services in rural areas

Money is still available from a grant scheme to boost vital services in rural Wrexham.

The results from a questionnaire conducted last year clearly show that many residents in rural areas feel they miss out on services – often because they have to travel further to access them.

The aim of the grant scheme is to redress the balance by helping local groups and agencies provide additional services and facilities.

Two types of funding are being offered – a ‘fast-track’ grant of up to £500 and a larger grant of up to £15,000 – to help local groups and agencies provide much-needed extra facilities for local people.

Both grants are up for grabs as part of the Rural Services Pilot Project, which is being run by local partnership Northern Marches Cymru (NMC).

NMC officer Dave Gittins said: “Money is still available for projects wanting to apply for the grant scheme but time is running out. Projects have to be up and running by December 31st 2010 and we don’t want communities to miss out on the opportunity.”

To be eligible for funding, projects must be based in the rural areas of the borough and meet a genuine demand from local residents.

Grants can be used to pay for up to 80% of a project, with the remaining 20% funded by the applicant.

The grant scheme is aimed at providing essential community facilities such as community shops in villages where they have previously closed or have never had them.

The larger grant scheme is specifically aimed at helping applicants adapt or alter buildings or buy new equipment.

The Rural Services Pilot Project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Union.
