Play Day Heading for Queens Square

Children of all ages are invited to Queens Square on 4th August to celebrate National Play Day 2010 between 12.00 am and 4.00 pm.

Organised by the Wrexham Play Network, this is the fourth year Wrexham Council have hosted the event. This year's theme is "Our Place Too" and will promote children being seen as equal members of our communities and having their right to play supported by the people also living in those communities.

Mike Barclay, Play Development Coordinator with Wrexham Council, said:

"Children are equal members of our society and we must uphold and support their right to play. "Our Place Too" aims to highlight the need to ensure children have the time and space necessary for playing within the communities in which they live.

Cllr Arfon Jones, Lead Member for Children and Young People, said:

"Everything is set for another exciting and fun time for young people and I know everyone will have a wonderful time. I hope as many people as possible take time to attend the event and to see the many opportunities on offer to make play as enjoyable as possible for children and young people."

On offer on the 4th will be a water slide and fight, a play cafe, an early years are, lots of sand, gunge and gloop so there are plenty of opportunities to get wet and messy so come prepared.

A new campaign will also be launched at the event. Called "Our Place Too" it will encourage adults to share their own play stories from when they were children. By doing so they can judge for themselves how the freedom children have to play today has changed compared to when they were young.

By the end of the campaign organisers hope to have a large collection of stories and photographs to highlight how previous generations valued play and to show how perceptions of children's play have changed over a generation.

The campaign will be launched using a "Play Cafe" and parents and carers can sit down, have a drink and talk about their memories." It will be run for 12 months and a large display will be on show at the 2011 Playday event next August.
