Community invited to celebrate park re-opening

A special weekend of community based activities are taking place at Ponciau Banks this weekend to help celebrate the parks being re-opened after extensive refurbishment.

The park will be hosting a day of community based activities on Saturday June 13, from 12-4pm. The event is open to all and will include a fun fair and live music being performed on the re-developed bandstand by local bands.

Members of North East Wales Wildlife (NEWW) will also be on hand on the day to talk about the various wildlife that lives at the park, as well as offering nature themed activities for all the family.

The local BMX club, ‘Wrexham Rebels’ will also be on hand to offer free bike maintenance to anyone who brings along their old bikes. The park has a new BMX track – which has been funded by Barclays Spaces for Sports throughout the day.

The celebrations continue on Sunday 14th June with an open air ‘Songs of Praise’ Service. The event will be interdenominational and is open to everyone. Local choirs will be performing traditional hymns and refreshments will be available throughout the day. The service runs from 2-3 pm and is free.

Ponciau Banks Park received £504,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to spend towards improvements and restoring the cultural heritage of the Rhos and Ponciau areas. The money has been spent on major refurbishments including the renovation of the bandstand and a new viewing amphitheatre, which will be used for outdoor events throughout the year.

Other refurbishments include new tennis and basketball courts, plus a new skate park

The completion of the scheme signals the end of a long project which has seen Wrexham County Borough Council, the Friends of Ponciau Banks Park community group, Rhos Community Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund working together to return the Park to its former glory.
