We Have Lift Off at Wrexham Library

Libraries across Wales are ready to send children on an intergalactic adventure that will keep them reading throughout the summer holidays with the 2010 Summer Reading Challenge – Space Hop. They will have to help the young crew of the Ex-Libris to set up the first library on the Moon! But watch out for the dastardly Spacekatz!

Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones, launched the challenge recently in Wrexham Library and commented: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to keep the children entertained over the holidays and introduce them to their local library. As a child, I enjoyed reading books by the Welsh language author, T. Llew Jones (Trysor y Morladron) and by Arthur Ranson (Swallows and Amazons).

Space Hop taps into children's fascination with space travel and crazy alien worlds - it's an imaginative and fun way to encourage children to read - and they might find out something about the planets in their universe at the same time!”

Several school groups from across Wrexham took part in the launch with a space themed rhyme time for a playgroup, an ‘Ask the Expert’ session via an online video conference with the National Space Centre in Leicester for some Year 3 pupils and a visit to the Mediatheque for secondary school pupils. Children between 4 and 11 can sign up for the Challenge at their local library from 19th July - all materials are absolutely free and an interactive website has also been launched (www.spacehop.org.uk) giving children the space to talk about their favourite books and share reading ideas.

Children are encouraged to read six or more books of their choice during the holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate or medal for every child who completes the Challenge.
