Contractor Appointed to Build New Rhosymedre School

Watkin Jones have been awarded the contract to build a new £5 million, 210 place primary school in Rhosymedre and demolition works begin this month.

The new school will have a U shaped layout and will conform to BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) standards, which is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainabel design and has become the industry standard used to describe a building's environmental performance. Marches Ecology is overseeing the land use and ecology aspects of the project and no problems such as great crested newts or bats have been reported.

Sustainable features for the new school include solar thermal panels to provide heating to the domestic hot water system for the kitchens and toilet facilities. Under floor heating will be provided via a groundor air source heat pump unit. all light fittings will be of a high efficiency or LED light source and lighting controls will be incorporated in the design to optimise the use of natural daylight.

During construction works pupils will be taught in the infant building and mobile classrooms.

Cllr Aled Roberts, Leader of Wrexham Council, said:

"I know the whole community is looking forward to having a first class school that is fit for the 21st Century. We are committed to ensuring our young people are taught in an environment that brings out their full potential. I look forward to following the new building's progress and to its opening next year."

Currently in Wrexham works are ongoing to improve three secondary schools and plans are in the pipeline for a new Welsh Medium Primary School in Gwersyllt and a new Primary School in Llay.

In excess of £35 million is being invested in school buildings and officers will continue to seek every opportunity to access funds to enable even more improvements to take place in the county borough.
