Following the success of last year’s inaugural Wrexham Champion Sausage Competition, organisers have confirmed that the event will take place again this year as part of the 2009 St David’s Day celebrations.
Butchers across the County have been written to with details of this year’s competition and it is hoped that they will once again accept the challenge to find Wrexham’s best banger. Potential entrants have until February 2nd to return their forms with judging and announcement of the winners taking place on Saturday 28th February.
The judging and prize giving form part of the St David’s Day celebration weekend in Wrexham which will see a Welsh market take place on Queens Square together with music, refreshments and cookery demonstrations from top Welsh chef Bryn Williams. On Sunday a parade of Welsh bands will take place in the town centre finishing with a performance of the national anthem on Queens Square.
The event has been organised by Wrexham Council’s Economic Development Department and Cllr Rodney Skelland, Lead Member for Corporate Governance and Regeneration says: “Last year’s St David’s Day celebrations were a great success and the Sausage competition was an important part of that. Wrexham has a great butcher’s market in the town centre and many other fine independent butchers in the rural area so this is a great way of promoting what we have to offer.”
Top judge Dennis Turner will again be officiating while self-styled Sausage King Stephen Plume is also expected to attend. Last year’s winning entry was a pork and chive sausage made by R.S. Williams and Sons from Bank Street in Wrexham town centre.
